Jesinta Franklin’s guide to staying well all winter

On Monday Jesinta Franklin launched her app Jesinta, a platform where she offers advice and insight into her life including health tips, her go-to recipes, workouts and beauty tutorials. There’s even an ‘Ask Jesinta’ section where you can get in touch with the model. Here, she shares some of her top tricks for staying well all winter long.

Use food as medicine

“In Winter I eat warming foods, slow cooked broths, lamb and soups. I even cook all of my sauces in the slow cooker and winter veggies. I try to eat as seasonal as possible, so lots of root vegetables like parsnip, potato and pumpkin. For years I was so focused on everything I ate, but now I’m a lot more relaxed and more focused on feeding myself food that will nourish my body.”

Her favourite winter recipes include Chicken and Vegetable Bone Broth Soup. “I love it, it’s full of lots of vegetables, grains and slow cooked chicken broth which is great for gut health. I’ve also got a Breakfast Frittata recipe coming soon [to the app] and some easy Ginger and Date Snack Balls that are my afternoon pick-me-up before reaching for the chocolate! I’ll be uploading a couple of recipes a week, I shoot them all in my kitchen and write all the recipes myself.”

When it comes to avoiding the flu, Jesinta uses food as medicine. “If I feel like a cold is coming on I’ll add a bit more ginger to meals or I’ll make some anti-inflammatory juices with turmeric and ingredients that have lots of Vitamin C. I also drink beetroot juice daily because it’s so good for your blood and for female health.”

Listen to your body

Her approach to fitness and working out has changed, explaining that slowing down and listening to her body is more important than working out every day. “I think my body responds a lot better to a balanced approach to fitness instead of just smashing it with cardio and high intensity workouts every single day. I don’t believe we’re meant to operate like that, I believe in being consistent but creating more balance.

My go-to is a nice long walk and a couple of times a week I do boxing or a weight session and pilates. Working out shouldn’t be the main focus of your life you really need to have a more holistic approach to health.

When you workout so hard you can get burnout and adrenal fatigue and you open yourself up to getting unwell. If you do get sick, don’t workout – give your body a rest, try a yin yoga class or go for a nice long walk – they say that a good hour power walk is just as good as a 5km run, so you can still get your exercise in without having to smash yourself.”

Self-care is king

Self-care is one category Jesinta is big on. Once a week App users will get a Thought of the Day or inspirational quote sent to their phone that are thought provoking and inspirational. “Self-care is a holistic practice women need to prioritise daily, and there’s so much more associated with it then just beauty and face masks,” she says.

Her weekly rituals include both physical and mental treatments. “I love an Epsom salt bath, they’re really detoxifying and relaxing and that’s a bit of me time.

I make a conscious effort to turn my phone off and have twenty minutes to myself. I also love an infrared sauna and acupuncture. I’ve really gained so much from acupuncture, I feel like I’m a much calmer person from it, by dedicating one hour a week to focus on my body and listen to it.”
