There are two types of people in this world: the ones who ask for mash with their meatballs at IKEA, and the ones who get chips. Actually, there’s also a third type of person: the ones who ask for both. There is nothing remotely gastronomic about a plate of IKEA meatballs, but name another fast food item with the capacity to diffuse an international incident quicker than you can say Billy Bookcase? How many marriages have been saved, I wonder, by a calming trip to the IKEA canteen? 

This recipe bears little resemblance to the sort of meatballs you could find in a large blue and yellow hellhole off the north circular, but they do make for a lovely Spring-like dinner. Serve them with mash and pickles…
